Professional Development

Small sentence here….

One of the primary objectives of the CRTO is to support the continuous professional development of its Members. Professional development encompasses many forms of learning opportunities, ranging from formal education, such as degrees, conferences, employer-based educational programs and certifications, to the less structured, day-to-day forms of learning, such as rounds, webinars and consultations with a colleague.  Ongoing growth through professional development enhances a Respiratory Therapist’s (RTs) ability to provide safe, competent and ethical patient/client care.

Through the Professional Development Program (PDP), GROW and various e-learning modules, the CRTO strives to offer its Members access to resources that will assist them in their professional development activities.

Social Media Awareness for Regulated Healthcare Professionals

This learning module was produced in collaboration with six other health regulatory Colleges in Ontario. Numerous examples and case-based scenarios are included to illustrate social media use in health care and to help you reflect on your own use of social media in Respiratory Therapy practice.

The module does not replace your professional obligation to read relevant standards and legislation; rather it reviews the professional standards of practice, the legislation and the principles you need to know to establish risk management strategies to help maintain a professional reputation and appropriate professional relationships in your practice. It also answers everyday practice questions and offers best practice suggestions for using social media.

GROW

As health care evolves and changes, the traditional role of Respiratory Therapists and how they provide care will also need to change. The best way to prepare for this is to identify the skills RTs will need to recognize opportunities and embrace new roles for the profession. A strong clinical background is essential, but there are also many other skills and activities that define a well-rounded Respiratory Therapist.

As professionals, RTs continuously acquire new knowledge that aids in critical thinking and the expansion of skills. Collaborating with other professionals and learning how to function as a leader are important when managing and promoting positive change. Effective communication is vital for RTs when working with peers and patients.

Health care is complex and as it continues to progress, RTs must also GROW to continue to meet the evolving needs of patients.

The College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario is proud to present a Professional Development Framework for Respiratory Therapists.

The framework consists of several roles that highlight the diverse abilities of the profession. These areas of potential growth reach beyond clinical knowledge to education, leadership and innovation.
