Overview

To practice Respiratory Therapy in Ontario an applicant is required to meet the registration requirements of the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO). The current criteria include, but are not limited to:

  1. graduation from an educational program approved by the CRTO, and
  2. successful completion of a CRTO approved examination.

The CRTO accepts the Canadian Board of Respiratory Care (CBRC) Examination as the entry-to-practice examination (b, above). A person may be granted a (temporary) Graduate Certificate of Registration by the CRTO before completing the approved examination. A Graduate Certificate may be issued for up to eighteen (18) months.

Eligibility

First-time exam writers who are or will be graduates of approved Respiratory Therapy programs1 are automatically eligible to write the CBRC examinations. Candidates must apply and pay directly to the CBRC to write the exam.

1 List of approved programs is available on the CRTO website.

Exam Re-Writes

The CRTO will determine the eligibility of the following candidates who are writing the exam to meet (Ontario) registration requirements:

  • Exam candidates who were not successful on their first exam attempt and who are applying to rewrite the exam.
  • Exam candidates who have not graduated from one of the approved respiratory therapy training programs.
Study Plan Approval
  1. Exam candidates who fail the exam three or more times are required to contact the CRTO regarding the development and submission of a study plan.
  2. CRTO staff will review the study plan to ensure that the plan is consistent with the expectations outlined in the Study Plan Guide. CRTO Staff will provide feedback to the applicant concerning the content of their study plan.
  3. Following approval of the study plan, the exam candidate will be eligible to write the exam again (if they meet other requirements for registration, e.g., meet the fluency, currency, suitability to practice requirements and be eligible to work in Canada as a Respiratory Therapists).
